Ripping off workers?

September 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments · career

An article on MSN talks about how the lowest paid workers are ripped off.  They are paying less than minimum wage, many worked overtime and were not paid, and many did not get paid for lunch break or worked through it.
Can we change this?  Is it really only happening to low wage workers?
Honestly?  I think [...]

Working to make ends meet

August 15th, 2009 · 6 Comments · budgeting, career

There is an interesting article if you listen to NPR about the rising number of people working second jobs.  What was an increase last year when 1 in 10 people got second jobs, is expected to double this year!  Wowsa.
The reality is that many people are facing paycuts rather than outright job losses. I have [...]

Giving up Daycare?

July 30th, 2009 · 16 Comments · Children, budgeting

Yesterday I asked what do you use an EF for.  Today I ponder an interesting question, raised actually by the person who lost their job.  I heard this from my mom.  Do they assume that the man will immediately be able to find work, and thus leave their 4 year old enrolled in preschool?  The [...]

What if you have no EF?

July 29th, 2009 · 10 Comments · Savings, career

Yesterday I asked the question when do you use the EF?  A commentor asked the question what happens if you have no Emergency Fund?  Good question.  If you are blindsided or perhaps you are following Dave Ramsey’s philosophy and only have a baby emergency fund of $1k?  What do you do?  What can you do?
Well [...]

Generous work gift

July 19th, 2009 · 7 Comments · Income, career

Oprah Winfrey gave her staff of 100 people a mediterranean cruise costing $1 million.  That works out to $10k per person. Not to mention I’m guessing the time off to go on the cruise.  A very generous gift right?  Absolutely.
But I’m wondering if anyone is sitting there thinking, hmm…I’d rather have $10k cash?  Honestly that [...]

Overpaid stay at home parents?

July 16th, 2009 · 11 Comments · Income, career

I was discussing life insurance on a WIR message board, and of course the thread was hijacked into, how much do you need if you are a stay at home parent?  Well according to Salary.com, apparently a stay at home mom is worth $122k in salary.  A working mom’s salary at home is $76k.  Um [...]

Should Pastors make a lot?

July 5th, 2009 · 12 Comments · Income, Religion, career

Do you know how much your pastor makes?  Does it matter?  Is there a limit on how much a pastor should make?  A pastor in New York is making $500-600k/year.  This salary has prompted a lawsuit over his “compensation“.  So how’d he make so much?
Base $250k
Housing Allowance (rent) $11.5k = $138k/year
Private school for Child
Maid
Home Equity [...]

May 14th, 2009 · 3 Comments · career

Another post for the college money network.  This time I ask the question should you move for a job?  What to consider before you do?
After finishing college many people are faced with the tough decision, should they move for a job?  The answer?  It depends.
First, consider the job opportunity itself.  Is it a position you [...]
