Stupid Tax

March 15th, 2010 · 7 Comments · stupid tax

Do you ever do something really stupid?  Something you wonder why and how you do it?  I realized yesterday I really need to start buying insurance on my cell phone.  I dropped it again and it stopped working.  I need to take it into the cell phone store and get it replaced. Fortunately it’s still [...]

Frugal ATM Tip

April 10th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Frugal, Savings, stupid tax

Next week I’ll be hosting the Festival of Frugality.  Please be sure and submit your posts here!  I hope that you will participate.
This week my frugal tip is saving on cash withdrawals from an ATM.  Typically when you use a regular ATM you are charged a fee by the machine and the your own bank.  [...]

Too good to be true interest rates

April 4th, 2009 · No Comments · Financial Mistakes, Personal Finance, stupid tax

A few weeks ago I talked about Getting Advice. How sometimes you look towards friends and family for advice on investments, but you really need to do your own research. It’s how a lot of people got caught up in a Ponzi Scheme by Bernie Madoff.  They listened to investment advice without researching.
Another easy financial [...]

Retirement gets the axe…

October 23rd, 2008 · 5 Comments · Debt, Financial Mistakes, Goals, Retirement, stupid tax

I read all the time people asking on blogs, message boards, and even in real life, “Should I reduce my retirement contributions to pay off debt?”  I cannot emphasize what a HORRIBLE statement that is.
It’s funny that when getting out of debt, people view retirement as free money to be cut and used for debt repayment.  [...]

Bridge to Nowhere?

September 3rd, 2008 · 12 Comments · stupid tax, taxes

I gotta mention this.  McCain picked as his choice Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska.  Initially in 2006 Palin backed funding for the Bridge to Nowhere, or the bridge between Ketichkan and Gravina Island.  This was to cost $233 million.
In 2007 Palin changed her mind and said it was a terrible Pork Barrel Spending Idea.  Sounds [...]

When a sale isn’t a deal

September 1st, 2008 · 7 Comments · Savings, Spending, stupid tax

When is a sale not a deal?  Simple answer, when you are buying something at rock bottom prices for no other reason than it’s on sale.  Sounds stupid right?  But how many people justify buying something because it was on sale? Or say it’s such a great deal I couldn’t pass it up.  The truth [...]

MP Regrets House…

July 14th, 2008 · No Comments · Debt, Economy, Financial Mistakes, Rant, stupid tax

Well it took 7 months, but apparently MP Dunleavy is now regretting her decision to buy her second home while renting out the first home.  I mentioned this was a stupid idea in December 2007 here.  And last month I asked why is she complaining about paying off debt?  Especially since she was reducing retirement savings to [...]

A fear of cash?

July 2nd, 2008 · 6 Comments · Financial Mistakes, stupid tax

Okay, so I am not fond of carrying cash.  I honestly have no idea how people can walk around with hundreds of dollars in cash in their wallet.  I definitely would be paranoid and constantly worried about losing the money.
But I forgot to post the other day about my new fear of cash.  So typically [...]

Justifying Purchases…

June 2nd, 2008 · 8 Comments · Spending, stupid tax

On a fun thread I was reading, people were asked what justifications had you heard from people to explain their spending?  The list was quite fun and amusing.  Here’s a rundown of the list.
1.  I work hard, I deserve it.
2.  Once you’ve had quality, it’s hard to go back.
3.  You’ll always have a car payment, [...]

Risk Versus Return?

April 21st, 2008 · 4 Comments · Fun, stupid tax

So today DH and I went out to eat.  We went out for Taiwanese Dim Sum.  A different version of Hong Kong style dim sum.  Which is a chinese style brunch with lots of little dishes.  Very tasty.
Anyway, DH orders a dish called Chitlins and spareribs stewed.  It comes out and he hates it. I [...]
