Predicting the Future?

April 29th, 2008 · 7 Comments

No one can predict the future. Nor can you perfectly plan your life so no mistakes every happen.  For example when we moved cross country, if you had told us my DH would lose his job within 3 months we wouldn’t have moved.  We also would not have bought a house.  But we made the [...]

Careers and Student Loans?

September 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Do you regret taking out student loans to go to college? Do you regret your career? Do you wish that you had chosen another career? If so what has stopped you from doing so? Was it finances? Time commitments? Or have you gone back to school to retool your career?
I wonder what role the earning [...]

Vacation Time

August 27th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I read that the US has the lowest amount of time off in the westernized countries. The average time off is 13 days/year. However most people start out with an average of 8.9 days/year. This is about half what most European countries allow their workers.
I get an uncounted number of days off [...]

Company update

June 7th, 2007 · 4 Comments

So a couple of things about DH’s job situation. He took the new job, but it may be for the best. Today he got a very strange email at work asking that if anyone was taking time off next week please contact HR. Very strange indeed. He thinks and others have hinted that potentially layoffs [...]

Tuition Reimbursement or lower salary?

May 28th, 2007 · No Comments

I guess I should be more clear about DH’s salary. In some ways he is making less because we are leaving guaranteed money on the table. Every year he gets $x, on his anniversary, then two annual bonuses which vest in July and February. So we are leaving right now $40k on the table, potentially [...]

Renegotiating an offer?

May 26th, 2007 · No Comments

DH renegotiated his offer from the new company. They threw in a signing bonus, guarantee of management experience, and assurance of tuition reimbursement. But I suppose this is not the reason he is taking the job offer.
Well DH was asked to propose an idea for an intern coming to work with him over the summer. [...]

New Job Offer?

May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

DH got the job offer he was hoping for today. It was good in some ways but bad in others. One thing is it was a lower cut in salary. Yep, my first thought was “oh dear and crap.” Taking a step back in salary sounds terrible, but DH is super excited.
I’m not sure what [...]

Fronting money for a company?

May 15th, 2007 · 2 Comments

DH is away at a conference. The company is of course paying for it. But we are forced to front the bill for the week. So then they will reimburse us for rental car, airline ticket, food, gas, etc. I think this is very common, but I wonder what do people do who are in [...]
