Our old printer at home died. We had just bought a bunch of online ink cartridges for it because it was running through ink. We just thought we were using our printer a lot. Turns out a part broke, and the ink dries out from the cartridges quickly, thus leaving it unable to print.
So now we’re stuck with a bunch of ink cartridges that don’t work on any other printer. Our printer was bought in 2002 so it’s lasted a good many years. It was a dirt cheap $30 Canon inkjet printer and I’d have to say we got our money’s worth. But now decision time.
Do we buy an older printer on ebay or craigslist? Realizing that it could be difficult and expensive to find a printer that uses those cartridges? Or do we sell the cartridges on ebay/craigslists and get a totally new printer? I believe we could get combo printer for $50 or $60.
Right now we’re leaning towards a new printer and selling off our scanner and dumping the cartridges. What would you do and why?
And yes we like having a printer at home. I like printing coupons at home. My DH and I print off papers and stuff for school or work. Yes we do print lots of stuff off at work, but on the weekends it’d be more hassle to go into work than just print it off at home. So a printer at home can be handy.

I’d buy a new one and sell the cartridges. Even if you COULD find the same printer on ebay or such – since it’s likely as old as you had therefore likely at the end of its life.

I’d sell the ink as a lot if possible. Try craigslist first, then ebay. You might be able to bundle the broken printer for someone who is into repairing them. Then I’d get a new printer.
We got tired of our ancient inkjet jamming and not printing, and bought a new one that has wireless, card readers, and can print edgeless prints. It is very much worth the money!

One more thing – if you print photos at all you may want to look at a ‘photo’ printer. I’ve got a hp photosmart – a bit pricey at around $100 but I’m tickled with it. You can print regular things to it, but you can also print all kinds of sized photos. My favorite part is I can take out my photo card and put in in the printer. Especially since my usb camera cord has gone missing.

R May, good point about the age of the printer. I’m leaning to selling it because I am finding it hard to find an old printer.
I don’t need a photo printer, I’m not a huge photo person.
JoeP what type of printer do you have?
