Net Worth and Monthly Wrap Up

April 1st, 2009 · 5 Comments · Net Worth

This was a great month for our networth.

It was even a pretty good month spending wise.  Previously we had spent $452 and $345 on groceries in January and February.  But in March we only spent $75, so I guess there were too many deals to pass up and we stashed them until now.

Our most outrageous category since the beginning of the year has been our pet’s healthcare.  OMG.  This month was over the top.  We spent $592 in March, $160 in January, and $264 in February.   Also we have a medical/insurance plan for $70/month for two pets, so an extra $210 for 3 month.  The grand total in 3 months we’ve spent $1226 this year.  Huh, I knew our money was going somewhere and we hadn’t been eating out or traveling.  Pets are definitely not cheap, and most of the money was spent for one dog with special food, medications, tests done for his severe allergies and skin condition.

Frugal tip – don’t get a dog if you want to save money.  Although I did have company on the bed while my DH traveled.

Agreed on pet expenses. We’ve decided that our current dog will be our last one. There are many other things we want to do and buy, and those are either a stretch or impossible right now. Not having a dog will free up more cash for us and also greatly simplify our lives and give us more freedom (e.g., no need to let the dog out if we want to go somewhere right from work).

I wish we had the discipline to analyze our expenses. Funny, we have and use Quicken, but I’ve never used the category feature in such a way that meaningful reports can be generated. Maybe a paper and pencil will work just as well for that!

Our two dogs are our last until our kids that we don’t have are bigger. I think we won’t have the time to properly care for dogs when we have kids. The two we have are old enough and trained that it’ll be easy with kids.

Your house did not decline in value? You’re very lucky if that is true. While I still have considerable equity in my home, it has gone down each quarter over the last year.
