Shop for next year

January 2nd, 2009 · 6 Comments · Frugal, Spending

Well it’s the day after New Year’s and I’m sure many people have the day off to make it a long weekend.  So what are you going to do this long weekend?  My suggestion, though it’s going to be tough to do is shop more.  Yikes!

To be honest I’m dreading shopping myself, but right now it’s a great time to shop and stock on dirt cheap prices on gifts for next year.  Also since you just saw people, perhaps you’ll have it fresh in your mind what they might be hoping for next year or mentioned loving in general.

Also now is the time to buy decorations, wrapping paper, Christmas cards, boxes at significant discounts (50-75% off in many cases) in preparation for next year. I always hated going shopping, but my mom would buy this year’s deals for next year and the cycle would continue the next year.  She would always “pre-buy” holiday gifts, decorations, etc.

By stocking up now, she was also able to get presents done over Thanksgiving weekend instead of waiting to go shopping, then wrapping, then mailing off gifts.  Instead she got to do them early before the rush, then relax during the holidays, then start preparing right after the holidays are done.

Sounds crazy, but I undertook this tradition these past few years and found it makes gift organization more smooth and faster.  So tip, go shopping this weekend for next year’s holidays and save money doing it!

I got a great deal on a Christmas tree on the 27th. Also picked up a wreath, lights, balls, a tree skirt – We cleaned up.

I usually buy wrapping paper, decorations, cards now, but not gifts for people. As far as gifts for other people, well, anything can happen (people get fat, pass away, change their styles, etc) unless it was something like something for their office, I probably wouldn’t buy it. It also seems like I only give people gift cards anymore because people are so picky, they take most things back with the gift receipts. :-(

I totally agree… I won’t go out special this year, but any stores I’ve been at since Christmas I’ve made a point to check out their Christmas clearance sections…. got some napkins, invites, cards and paper for next year… even a new tree!

I try to buy neutral gifts and stuff I know I’ll need during the year. Right now I just bought some cheap baby stuff since I have 3 showers this year to “gift” for.

CVS has all of their Christmas stuff on sale for 75% off. At my CVS, that includes the Scotch Tape. With two young kids, we go through tape faster than you can imagine! Yesterday I bought 6 rolls of wrapping paper, cutsie stocking stuffers for next year, tape and a couple of decorations for less than $5.00. It was great!

I noticed that as well! Many stores are at 50-75%.
