November 2008 Wrap Up

November 30th, 2008 · 8 Comments · Net Worth

I will be hosting this week the Fabulous Festival and the Festival of Frugality this week.  So stop by LAL Musings and LivingAlmostLarge to check out these two great carnivals.

Okay, so last week I wrote a post called “I peeked” where I discussed what I had lost in the stock market this year.  A commentor “Alice” called me stupid for investing. I probably am.  But I think of it more as being human. I don’t claim to be a financial guru, nor do I feel the need to brag or lie. It’s the truth. I could say “i moved all my money out and only lost $1k or something.  I’m a brilliant investor”.  That wouldn’t be the truth and well I’m normal and human.  I’m 29 and I have a lot to learn.  Sorry for the imperfection but maybe I’m making someone reading this blog feel okay with their own losses.

Anyway to wrap up the month. It was not as bad as I was worried about.  I know we had large losses but managed to save enough to make up for most of it.  Scary thought.  How was your month?

I think it is awesome that at 29 you have the numbers that you do! I am 46 and made alot of poor choices but have learned and am fortunate to have some money given to me that I didn’t earn from a relative. My brother, who is far more astute than I am, is managing the investment and I am on a small allowance. This allows me to live within my budget and develop good habits that I didnt’ have in my 20s. You guys are doing great!!

I like to think of myself as normal. It happens that we all make mistakes. But mine get written about.

That’s a lot better than I expected. Your investments are doing fine!

I don’t see how anyone can say you are stupid for investing. You have the time to wait for the market to recover and, in the meantime, you’re buying stocks priced so low that, in the long term, you’ll make out like a bandit. Your critic, on the other hand, who is presumably staying out of the market, will have much less to show for her timidity when the market corrects.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And Alice’s opinion sounds a lot like my mom’s.

I’m confused. Your first post made it sound like you lost $45k, and from your numbers here, it only appears like a few thousand?

Monthly wrap up Fengshui, not YTD. When I said I peeked, I meant annually. Sadly I don’t have enough to lost $45k in one month, though that would be cool.

Hey, my partner and I are also pushing 30, and we’re in the red–WAY in the red! We make $65k combined, and there are two Ivy League degrees lost in there somewhere ;) We’re working on it, but I’m still jealous.
