Beware this is a huge UPS rant. I hate UPS with a passion. I hate the fact UPS says they will be by your house by 6 pm, and thus when you come home by 5 pm and there isn’t a note on the door, you assume they haven’t arrived. Then you wait until 7 pm for a package due to arrive that day and NOTHING. No paper saying they stopped by.
Then when you go to their distribution centers they take forever to help people recieve their packages. You can be standing there easily 1 hour. I cannot believe the inefficiency of the company. How they say your package will be at the depot, but instead it’s still out on a truck for delivery, though you told them you’d come in to pick it up!
But that isn’t the issue today. A few months ago I ordered a new mattress from Costco. I discussed in Cost versus Comfort how we had chosen a novaform mattress. It’s awesome by the way. Problem? It’s hugely heavy and weighed 118 lbs upon delivery.
So what happened? The UPS guy delivered it to our house and broke our front step. Yep he snapped off a piece of the stone, which caught under this delivery dolly. He was rolling it up the steps because of the weight. I took pictures and called UPS immediately. What can you say? The package was huge and the guy was tiny (well comparatively).
Anyway, I call and bug UPS about fixing the stairs they broke. It took 2 months for a manger to call me back and multiple messages. Finally they called me back.
The first question was why should we pay for it? My answer “You broke it.” 
Anyway the manager says do you really want us to come out for something so cheap to be repaired? I say yes, I’m part of a condo association and they aren’t paying for it and neither am I.
Well they come out and decide that they are going to pay minimal amounts to do the repairs. This is why I hate UPS.

Don’t be surprised, if you keep pushing UPS, that they turn around and sue you! Plan on that delivery guy to say he hurt his back while climbing up your defective step, which shouldn’t have broken in the first place.
UPS has way more money than you plus a bevy of lawyers.
Keep complaining.
It will do you and your pocketbook a world of good.
Get over it.

I have to agree, I had a check waiting for me before vacation last winter. It was critical I paid extra to have it shipped next day. I wouldnt have had the money to go on vacation if I didnt get the check. Well after a few days never got the check, called UPS, o its lost, my work wouldnt be able to cut me another before vacation. They were going to look, called me 2 days later, o we found it stuck in a conveyor belt. So I say Ill be there this afternoon to pick it up. I get there, they tell me its on a truck wont be there till 6pm, So I come the next day, o the guy never took it off the truck come back around 6, At this point Im leaving for vacation the next day, so I come back at 6 and FINALLY I get it. I’ve never seen a more inefficient company that could care less about its customers.

I love UPS! But I have a friendly relationship with my UPS man- we talk and joke, and I tell him what I’m up to and what the packages are. What happened to your steps really sucks, though.

When I use a service I use FEDEX! But this was an order from a company. I did not have a choice it was UPS or UPS.
I think UPS is better with companies. So if you use UPS at work it’s very different than at home for personal use.
I use UPS for work because that’s what most companies ship. AND strangely I’ve never had a problem. But personally? They suck.
And Rob, that’s exactly what happened. I didn’t have a choice for my delivery for my wedding gifts either.

I hate FedEx. They misrouted my final mortgage payoff (a $12,000 certified check) to Paris, France when it was supposed to go to Tennessee. They said they would refund the shipping cost and then didn’t. It took multiple follow-ups on my part to get it resolved. I’ve never had a problem with UPS, though.

Hi! Just be glad they didn’t leave your matress at your neighbor’s. I hate that policy they have of bring able to leave your stuff with a neighbor if you aren’t home. I t has happened to us 2 or 3 times. I haven’t got my checks I ordered yet , was suposed to get them last week. The bank is checking where they are. Who knows? Lisa

I’ve had horrible delivery screw-ups with both UPS and Fedex, but UPS was by far the worst to deal with in trying to straighten it out. At UPS they were rude, they lied, they kept trying to pretend facts were otherwise than they were. And that was not just one employee, but about a half-dozen. The Fedex people tried hard to solve the problem instead of figuring out some way to blame me for it. Given any choice at all, I use Fedex.
I don’t want to trigger any hate mail here, but I wonder if the difference is that UPS is unionized and has a pretty hostile relationship with its union and vice versa, while Fedex is not unionized (or at least they weren’t the last time I remember hearing about it).

Yep at UPS they lie about everything. I called and have left messages but NOTHING. Those guys are awful.
