$250k for sex?

September 12th, 2008 · 15 Comments · Miscellaneous, Morals

Crap that’s what it’s going for now!  Apparently a student at Sacramento State is selling her virginity for money.  Apparently she’s in student debt hell and wants to go to graduate school.

I gotta wonder how such a transaction will work?  Just so you know it’s legal, because she’s doing it in Nevada at the Bunny Ranch.  The bidding is not on ebay but the proprietor of the brothel is running the bidding.  I wonder what his cut is???  And likely it’s taxable. sheesh, sex is taxable now!

But seriously I am in awe of what to think. The feminist in me says, well that’s what we are fighting for.  The right to do what we want.  The the liberal in me says, she is her own individual to make her own decisions.  Plus think about all the sex you gave away for free???  The practical side of me says, maybe she’s a capitalist and who is dumb enough to pay $250k (she’s hoping $1 million) for sex?  Finally, I guess worrywart side.

How do you know she’s telling the truth?  Yes she took a lie dector test, but still.  And how do you know she really looks like the picture below?  And isn’t and old geezer making up a story?  So yes I’m a bit cynical. Plus I wonder if it’s only open to men?

Her parents must be so proud!

First, her price tag is too high and she, well just isn’t my type.

    My preference is more sublte.

I saw another pic on another forum and it was no where close to being as complimentary as this one and this one doesn’t do much for me.

And as Barb1954 said, I bet mom and dad is proud. And in today’s world, they are probably more proud than sad.

I don’t think there are that many people with $250K-$1MM to blow who are that interested in taking some stranger’s virginity. At least I hope there aren’t. She’s way over-estimating the value of her virginity in today’s America. Most guys (especially men with that kind of money) can get sex for free, or at least for a whole lot cheaper than that.

I don’t know whether I think that should be legal or not…there’s a fine line between a “woman’s right to choose” and choices that should be limited (what if a woman chooses to kill her husband? Obviously there’s a line to be drawn somewhere). I lean towards “oh, hell no” - this isn’t ancient China, this is modern day America. Are we really going to allow a financial market to be created for young women’s virginity???

And to your other question, I think by definition only men are eligible (yes I know there are lots of things women can do to each other, but does that really count as losing your virginity?).

A guy who would pay $250k to have sex with a virgin would be seriously creepy.

The article states the manager/owner of the Bunny Ranch already has offers of $250k! I am blown away but apparently there ARE!

Must be one of the more expensive lays and it’s not alimony or child support! Crazy.

I gotta agree about the creepiness factor.

And apparently her stepfather took out student loans her name and disappeared. Hence she ended up in debt because of his forging her name.

EEEWWWW. I don’t know, maybe i’m old fashioned, but giving your virginity away to some stranger for money is seriously messed up to me. it’s awkward enough with someone you completely trust and know well!

@Meg: What you say is very interesting; I wonder what the value of anyone’s virginity would be worth. Maybe it’s jsut because I’ve been reading way too many pop economics books of late, but this seems like a really interesting question. Any economists out there working on this?

I imagine the research would be fun too…

Hey, it’s her body. More power to her if this is what she wants to do.

What gets me is how public this all of this is. If her name is attached to the story (which I assume it is, I just haven’t followed the link), then she will be forever known as “the woman who sold her virginity to go to grad school.” She’ll be enshrined that way on the internet for years–no going back. The fact that she sold sex to pay off debt will be available to potential employers, friends, lovers, and the general public. I wrote some really dumb stories for my college newspaper, and when you google my name they come up. That’s embarrassing enough! But this? Yikes…I guess if she doesn’t care, then again, more power to her!

@ Meg, why couldn’t a woman lose her virginity to another woman? Not to sound all high and mighty, but assuming that only sex with men counts as sex is kind of…well, sexist. If that’s the case, I know lots of women who are still “virgins” who, in fact, have had a LOT of sex.

I don’t know if it’s considered sex only with men. I am guessing a woman could easily win, but I wonder if they just refuse to accept the bid. After all it’s not random ebay, it’s with a proprietor of the brothel.

Yeah, for the purposes of this weird auction, I’m assuming it’s only for men! I just meant in general.

FitWallet makes a good point, though I’d already forgotten about her! But you’re right, it sets a precedent.

Well, I mean, if you want to get technical I just don’t think that fingers, tongues, and/or strap-ons count as losing your virginity. Of course oral sex is still sex, but it doesn’t count as losing your virginity.

Besides, if a guy and girl engage in those same activities, you wouldn’t say the girl lost her virginity, so how could it count as losing your virginity when two girls do it?

I’m not sexist or anti-lesbian by any means…it’s an interesting question that I’m sure some women’s studies major can enlighten us on.
