Frugal Tip: Discount Pet Drugs

August 28th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Frugal, Pets

I am always looking for ways to save on pet meds for our dogs.  Since we’ve got two, it’s double the cost for medications.  So I try to buy them online and in bulk.  I found this great online store called Discount Pet Drugs.  If you order $100 worth of stuff it’s free shipping.

What I do is order Frontline Plus at least 12 months worth which is $120.  This gives me free shipping and I add on Heartguard to boot for $30 for a 6 month supply.  You actually need a prescription for the mediciations, but if you put in your vet’s name and number they usually just fax over a request and your vet confirms that your dog is health and needs the medication.  It just takes a few extra days but no big deal as long as you don’t need the medication immediately.

Typically buying Frontline and Heartguard from the vet’s office directly is a huge rip-off.  I shopped around at a lot of online pet drug discounters and by far this was the cheapest option with free shipping.

My vet said she didn’t trust any of those places for the heartworm. She actually offered to match the price from the one I was going for. The non-Rx meds you can get lots of places; I get mine on Amazon.

Great tip for us pet lovers. I’ll have to check to see if they ship to Canada…

My vet actually suggested to me that one of the drugs prescribed for my cat is available at most pharmacies for less than her clinic charges. I guess pet medicines can be people medicines, too.

I’ve seen the boxes and they look fine.

Check out vetshoponline.com. It’s a bit cheaper than the one you posted. Shipping is $4.95 but it’s still less.
