Update on Posts

August 12th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Credit Cards, Frugal, Personal Finance

I promised to give an update on a couple of posts.  First the single step challenge here, I said I would cancel a credit card and I did. I called up a credit card on my credit report that I didn’t have the actual card for an cancelled it.  I’ve been thinking about giving up a few more cards as well.  No it was not my oldest card fortunately, I still have my discover and american express cards, but I think I should cut down on the number of mastercards and visas I have.  I’ve been leapfrogging between credit cards because I haven’t really found two that I like.  Now that I’ve narrowed it down, I unfortunately still have rewards on a couple of them.  So I have to clear the rewards and then cancel the cards.

As for the new mattress I wrote about here.  There is good and bad.  The good?  It’s a super comfortable mattress.  We both love sleeping on it and the foam is amazing.  It does mould to one’s body.  And I have to say it’s very relaxing. I think it’s definitely worth the price.

The bad?  Well it’s heavier than the dickens!  It’s 133 lbs and it’s a pain to strip the bed and make it.  It’s tough lifting the mattress and tucking the sheets on.  I need my DH’s help every time.  And the mattress is extremely think which can be a problem for some bed frames.

But overall I love it and would buy it again. I don’t think we’ll ever go back to a regular mattress after this.

As long as they don’t have balances/fees it would be best to leave them open unless you’re really tempted to go into debt by having them. Cancelling credit cards shortens your credit history and can actually hurt your score. The only ones I generally “cancel” are store cards. My score is over or about 800 and I have about 10 accounts (none with late fees or balances carried from month to month).

One card is ok but don’t hurt your score by cancelling too many!!!

Fiance and I cut down to one AmEx and one Visa. We also have an Amazon Visa that we use just on Amazon (we buy a lot on Amazon). Three credit cards works for me. I solved the credit score “issue” by getting absurdly high limits on those cards.

Just the other day, there was a promotion with Discover to use the card and get 5% off or something. I was really disappointed that I had canceled Discover, but you know what, I didn’t need that promo! And I don’t need a bazillion credit cards!

I’m keeping my American Express and Discover because those are my oldest cards. Got them when I went to college so they are definitely not going to be cancelled. I use the AmEx at costco and Discover occasionally.

But I probably should pare down more my Visa/Mastercards. I’ve cherry picked using them depending on offers. Plus I’ve applied for multiple cards because I’ve been searching for the best rebates.
