Drunken Wall Street?

August 4th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Economy

Normally I don’t write too political stuff but this has been sitting on the back burner simmering. Plus I had to figure out how to get all these inserts to work.

So President Bush began to talk about our economy when he thought the cameras were off. He said that we are in trouble because Wall Street got drunk and now we have a hangover. That were were suffering from trying to manipulate fancy financial markets.  He asks how long will it take for people to sober up?

What I found ironic is that everyone was laughing at Mr. President’s statements and joking.  And President Bush was making the most jokes.  I wonder if people weren’t laughing because they had to and not because they believed it?  Most were journalists and I bet they are suffering too right now.  Worse, see this picture below.

I wonder why Bush is laughing and joking about Wall Street being drunk?  Has he seen this graph where he is the most spendthrift president ever? That under his reign we’ve gone deep into debt?  What sort of leadership is he showing to Wall Street and the American public?  That debt is GOOD!  That we should all go deep into debt and dig ourselves into a hole like the US government?

Regan and GHW Bush got the US in major debt in the 1980s.  But Clinton and the technology boom got us out.  But what did we learn?  Spend our surplus and borrow because it’s better to borrow than to save.

I wonder if we didn’t just follow the example set by the US government?  That you must be a spender to be a “Good” American.  After all if we don’t consume, we aren’t supporting the economy.  Guess that’s why the Government and Mr. President has driven us into debt.  We have to be Good Americans.
