Even cheaper than ordering invitations online is to make them yourself. We visited a wholesale paper supply place that had very nice wedding invitations for about $20 a box. Run them through your printer and you're done.

Also, make your own wedding favors.

I have read that not only is that $28K number hugely inflated (it's widely circulated and based on surveys done by expensive bridal magazines), but it also includes the honeymoon and wedding rings.

Of course there are people who spend that much and more, but it's important to remember that NOT everybody is doing it. You can have a VERY nice wedding (complete with exotic honeymoon and a diamond ring) for less than half that.

My ex and I did all of these things except for the invitations and the alcohol: a friend made the invitations for us, and we served booze. (The alcohol was partly a concession to my ex's culture: dry weddings are not that common in England.) Another friend played keyboards before and after the ceremony, and yet another friend was our photographer. My dress was a full-length silver formal that I got at Macy's for $133 using a 20% coupon.

My one regret was that we postponed a honeymoon until our second anniversary. As it turned out, we didn't make it that far.

I think it's an acceptable amount considering what some people earn and save. Also I doubt they are paying for it, so it's not a huge deal.

When you can afford it there is nothing wrong with a little luxury.

IMO $50k (or $28k for that matter) is a ridiculous amount regardless of how much you make.

Here are a few things we did to keep our wedding inexpensive...
